Application Guide:
This Application Guide Technical Bulletin provides information on how to apply various 3M™ Gripping Material products, including GM631, GM641, GM400, GM531, and GM731. These products all use the 3M™ Adhesive 300LSE, which is a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing that allows for easy peel and stick application of the Gripping Materials.
Application Procedure:
Start by thoroughly cleaning and drying the surface of the substrate to achieve maximum bond strength. Recommended cleaning solvents are heptane and isopropyl alcohol. Test the solvents on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure they clean the surface properly without causing any damage. Always follow the manufacturer’s precautions and directions when using cleaning solvents. Note that this cleaning recommendation may not comply with the regulations of certain Air Quality Management Districts in California, so it’s important to consult applicable rules before use.
The ideal temperature range for applying the pressure-sensitive adhesive backed 3M Gripping Material is between 70°F to 100°F (21°C to 38°C). It is not recommended to apply the material to substrate surfaces initially below 50°F (10°C) as the adhesive may become too firm to adhere properly. However, once properly adhered, the Gripping Material generally maintains good holding power even at low temperatures.
Applying firm and even pressure to the Gripping Material during application is crucial for achieving a strong bond. Ensure that the entire surface of the pressure-sensitive adhesive backing makes contact with the substrate, using firm pressure to ensure proper adhesion. In some cases, a roller may be used to apply the Gripping Material, but caution must be taken to avoid damaging the stems of the material.
After application, the bond strength will increase over time as the pressure-sensitive adhesive develops improved contact with the surface. At room temperature, approximately 50% of the ultimate strength will be achieved after 20 minutes, 90% after 24 hours, and 100% after 72 hours. The adhesive bonds to the substrate upon contact, allowing parts to be handled immediately.
Bond strength can be further improved by increasing time, pressure, and temperature. Applying firm pressure and moderate heat between 100°F (38°C) to 130°F (54°C) helps the adhesive develop better contact with the substrate surface.
If desired, the bond strength can be enhanced by abrading the substrate surface or using 3M Primers / Adhesion Promoters such as 3M™ Primer 94 and 3M™ Adhesion Promoter 111. These methods can increase bond strength and achieve the ultimate strength more quickly. Tools Needed: Rubber Hand Roller or Rubber Mallet
Ensure that individual pieces are spaced a minimum of 1/2″ apart and a maximum of 2″ apart.
Round the corners of any pieces cut from rolls.
Peel back the protective liner about 2″ from one end and position the piece on the surface. Take care to minimize touching the adhesive with fingers.
Continuously remove the liner while firmly pressing the piece in place.
For small pieces: Peel off the liner and hold the piece by its edges. Gently curve the piece with the adhesive side out. Align the middle of the piece over the middle of the target surface and press down.
Finally, ensure firm contact with the surface by using a rubber hand roller. Start in the middle and roll out toward the edges.
When applying 3M™ Safety-Walk™ Conformable Tapes and Treads, use a soft-headed rubber mallet to ensure product conformability to the surface. Apply extra pressure to the edges.
For steps, apply tread material 1/2″ from the stair edge to prevent edge curl and premature wear.
Maintenance Instructions:
Periodically inspect the application to maintain product effectiveness.
Coarse, General Purpose, and Conformable tapes and treads should be deck brushed regularly.
Medium and Fine Resilient Treads should be mopped or deck brushed regularly.
Use an appropriate degreaser/cleaner for general maintenance to keep the material and surrounding surfaces dirt and grease-free.
To remove and replace worn or torn material, start by pulling up the old material. A heat gun may assist in this process. After removal, use 3M™ General Purpose Adhesive Remover or an equivalent product to soften adhesive residue. Scrape the surface in preparation for product replacement.
Replace 3M™ Safety-Walk™ as you observe mineral wear or loss from its surface.

Treated or untreated wood must be painted prior to application.
Do not apply the material over surfaces with constant water contact or moisture seepage.
Avoid applying the material over grouting or cracks in concrete or any surface.
Quarry tile in commercial kitchens with constant oil exposure is not recommended for 3M™ Safety-Walk™ Slip-Resistant Materials.
Store the product in its original carton within the recommended temperature range of 40°F (4°C) to 100°F (37.7°C) and a humidity range of 40% to 60%.
It is recommended to use the product within five years from the date of receipt.
